Sun Shades - Sun Protection and Melanoma

(Please read our disclaimer)

According to the Centers for Disease Control skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. Avoiding sun exposure and indoor tanning can reduce the risk of developing melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. Melanoma may start out as a tiny speck but, like other deadly cancers, can metastasize to lymph nodes and other organs.

Although many people feel more attractive with a tan, daily unprotected sun exposure contributes to premature skin aging and increased skin cancer risks. No tan is considered a "safe tan." Sunscreen should be applied every day. Incidental sun exposure slowly adds up and damages our skin.

Research shows that most people do not regularly apply sunscreen. Science Daily quotes Mark Lebwohl, MD, president of the American Academy of Dermatology as saying, "Anyone can get skin cancer, so everyone should take steps to protect themselves from the sun." The steps include using a water-resistant broad-spectrum sunscreen with a SPF of 30 or higher.

What About Vitamin D?

Exposure to sunlight, actually the UVB part of sunlight on bare skin, can trigger our body to make vitamin D. According to the Vitamin D Council this process happens quickly, before our skin turns pink and starts to burn or tan. The time it takes varies depending on skin color, time of day, and time of year. It is well known that in the winter less vitamin D-making UVB rays shine on us if we live far from the equator. For many people the only way, and perhaps the safest way, of getting adequate vitamin D is by taking supplements.

Sunscreen for Anti-Aging

Sunburn is a skin injury. When our skin suffers sunburn, our immune system launches an inflammatory reaction that causes red, painful skin followed by peeling skin. The inflammatory reaction is the body's effort to remove and repair damaged skin cells. Wearing daily sunscreen is protection from further skin damage and allows skin to repair.

Grape Seed Extract

Published research shows that grape seed extract may help prevent skin cancers caused by sun exposure. Grape seed extract is a powerful antioxidant shown to be more effective than vitamin C or vitamin E. It reduces oxidative stress. Oxidative stress causes signs of aging, skin cancer, and inflammation. ProvexCV and Provex-Plus are rich in grape seed extracts and flavonoids.

Sun Shades

The first ingredient listed in Sun Shades Mineral 30+, after listing the active ingredients, is Aleurites moluccans, commonly known as kukui nut oil. Kukui oil is rich in antioxidants. It protects and heals irritated skin.

The Melaleuca Wellness Guide recommends Sun Shades Mineral 30+ with zinc oxide for daily sun protection. Naturally derived micronized zinc oxide dries sheer and never leaves a white chalky film. If you have "age spots," more sun exposure will cause the brown spots to get darker, leaving the light spots lighter. Going out without sun protection on cloudy-cool summer days can cause sunburn. It might just take longer. Sun Shades Mineral 30+ has broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection and is water-resistant for eighty minutes and ideal for sensitive skin.

It takes consistent effort to remember to reapply sunscreen and avoid sunburn. Using Sun Shades Sport SPF 45+ Spray makes reapplication simpler.

Use Sun Shades After Sun Hydrogel E after a day in the sun to instantly cool overexposed skin, reduce redness, and soothe dryness. After Sun contains contains T36-C5, aloe, Advanced E, glycerin, grape leaf, and green tea. It instantly cools overexposed skin, helping to deeply moisturize, soothe, reduce redness and help heal sunburned skin.

Sun protection for lips is especially important for those who suffer from cold sores, since exposure to sunlight is a known trigger for cold sores. Sun Shades Lip Balms protect delicate lips with SPF 15.

I live in the coastal area of South Carolina and am out in the sun every day. Unfortunately, I have very fair-skin, which is sensitive and burns easily. I switched to the Sun Shades products and I LOVE THEM ALL! The sunscreen goes on easily and is not sticky or leaves white film on me. It doesn't irritate my skin, and I like the light botanic smell instead of others that had me smelling like a coconut. The lip balms are in all of my purses, and my car. And, After Sun Hydrogel has made my overindulgence in the sun a little more comfortable. Thanks for such great products!

I very seldom have used sun screen products on the market because I just didn't trust them. With all the sunscreen hype, the skin cancer problem was still on the rise...why? I didn't trust the reaction that may be happening with the ingredients in store brand sun screens and the rise in skin cancer. Since switching over to Melaleuca products I do not have a problem using a sun screen knowing that the ingredients are not harmful to me and will not cause a negative reaction to my body when I'm out enjoying a beautiful sunny day. Both the cream and the spray are fantastic products that allow me to enjoy a day at the beach in the time of year that I love the most.

I went rafting on the Rogue River in Grants Pass Oregon this summer and spent 4 hours in the hot burning sun. I had a great hat on to protect my face but I was concerned for my arms and legs and back of neck. I used my Melaleuca Sun Shades Mineral Plus SPF 30+ Sunscreen before I got in and more when we stopped and took a break. I was amazed at the end of our ride, and after I cleaned up, that I did not have a sun burn anywhere!!! That has never happened before with any other Sun Screen product. I am fair skinned and I can tan usually after a burn, this time I had a tan and no burn. Thank you Melaleuca!!!

This story is on behalf of a friend of mine - she has very bad eczema and was told she MUST wear sunscreen in the summer. Only problem was everything she tried aggravated her eczema, including special sensitive skin sunscreens. I recommended she try Melaleuca's Sun Shades Mineral SPF 30+ Sunscreen, and it worked without causing any irritation or skin problems! She now loves the product, and her skin specialist also confirmed none of the ingredients in Sun Shades sunscreen would cause her any problems. We also only use Sun Shades Sunscreen on ourselves and our children. Before I discovered Melaleuca I had only found one sunscreen my children could use without causing irritation - and it was nearly twice the price of Sun Shades!!

I have been a customer going on 12 years now. Before finding Melaleuca we used Children's Banana Boat sunscreen on our oldest daughter which did NOT work. She was literally burned from head to toe because of that product and we reapplied as directed. Thank God for Melaleuca's Sun Shades sunscreen. It works!! We all went on a cruise to Mexico and got to put the Sun Shades brand to the test. One of our excursions was a day on the beach. I sprayed all the kids down with Sun Shades really good and later realized I hadn't re-applied any sunscreen on them after several hours. I just knew my babies were going to be red as lobsters by the end of the day. I was wrong. Our youngest who was 3 at the time had a little pink on her shoulders and that was it. We love our Melaleuca sunscreen. We also use the Sun Shades lip balm monthly. It's the best lip balm on the market. My husband is on lots of medications and his lips get very dry. Melaleuca's brand is the only one he'll use because it keeps his lips moist. Our only wish is they would offer it in the 10 pack all the time. The Sun Shades After Sun Hydrogel E Moisturizing Relief is awesome as well. One day I wanted to get a bit of sun and a little color. Well, I got my wish. I was so sunburned I hated putting on clothes that night. I applied the After Sun gel several times during the night and by that morning the burning was very mild and by the end of the next day all was good. As you can read we LOVE our Sun Shades products. They work!!

What a lifesaver Sun Shades is. A friend of mine was on a riding mower mowing the grass here at my cabin. He was not wearing a shirt! OUCH! When he came in he was very red and sunburned. I got the Sun Shades After Sun Hydrogel E and put it all over him....instant relief!! I sure was glad that I had this on hand. Since then I have helped others with this great product.

While doing some cooking the other day, I opened a lid and the steam burned my fingers. I have sensitive skin (I'm 93), so I put ice on my fingers while I got out the Sun Shades. I applied liberally to the burned area, and my fingers stopped burning, and they didn't even turn red! Thank you, Melaleuca, for another wonderful product. (Also, my great-grandchildren use Sport Sunscreen before swimming and Sun Shades after swimming, and they say it "feels good".)

~ Sibyl

I have fairly fair skin tone. Before I found Sun Shades sunscreen, I would burn a lot in the sun but no more. Now as long as I use Sun Shades, I get a beautiful golden tan and no more burns. I also use the Sun Shades lip balm every day and my lips stay very moist all the time. I really love the Sun Shades line. Thank you Melaleuca for your amazing products!!
