Most of us are surprised to learn that mosquitoes feed on plant juices and flower nectars. It is only the female mosquitoes that need to consume blood in order to reproduce. At 100 feet away a mosquito can smell the carbon dioxide from our breath and the scent of lactic acid on our skin. Once they get closer they sense our warmth. After the female mosquitoes lay eggs it might take only a week or two for new fully developed blood-hungry adult mosquitoes to emerge and repeat their reproductive life cycle.
Insect bites should not be taken lightly. There are several life-threatening communicable diseases that are transmitted through their bites. We can avoid insect bites by taking protective measures. First of all, whenever spending time outdoors, especially at dusk and dawn, wear long pants, long sleeves, and socks. A hat is also a good idea. Loose fitting clothing makes it harder for a biting insect to reach your skin. If you are planning an outdoor gathering, a gently blowing large fan will not only keep your guests cool, but will also blow away weak-flying insects.
Bug sprays are recommended, but caution is needed. Medline Plus warns us that breathing or swallowing DEET bug spray can cause poisoning, and that even pyrethrins bug sprays can cause problems. We also learn that DEET is especially dangerous to small children.
A study was done comparing DEET as an insect repellent versus the essential oils from eleven Australian plants. Although the protection against mosquitoes did not last as long as with DEET, Melaleuca oil was found to be effective.
When an insect bite causes itching and swelling, your body is producing histamine to neutralize the allergen. The swelling and itch is part of an allergic reaction. Scratching the bite can introduce a secondary infection. The soothing, antiseptic properties of T36-C5 calm the itch and help prevent infection. MelaGel is also antiseptic and soothing. A study confirmed that Melaleuca oil does reduce histamine-induced skin inflammation.

Also, to prevent mosquitoes from laying eggs near your home, make a habit of frequently changing the water in birdbaths and emptying any items, no matter how small, that might trap water.

I have a 6 month old baby who I call my "Melaleuca Baby" because that is all I use on her! We went to an outdoor birthday this past weekend, and of course my concerns were bugs and sun! The bugs were out of control as it has been a very soggy past few weeks and my poor baby had nasty little bugs all around her. I had made a small bottle of "bug spray" using Melaleuca Oil and water. We lightly sprayed my baby and the bugs DISAPPEARED! It was almost instant! I was so happy to find something so safe to use on her (and us)! I cannot say enough about all of these products and the difference it has made in mine and my family's lives! Thank you!!
The summer months have always been a blessing and a curse, especially when it comes to bugs. No matter what I do, the mosquitoes seem to flock to me. A few years ago, I was looking through my Melaleuca Wellness Guide and saw there were some solutions for insect repellent. I've tried all the suggestions listed, but my all-time fave solution is the Sol-U-Mel, T36-C5, and water in a spray bottle. I sprayed it all over my body, went outside and waited. I couldn't believe it - those pesky mosquitoes literally turned the other way. I was hooked. For the kids, I use a slightly diluted solution but still get the same results. Thanks once again, Melaleuca and RM Barry for putting the customers FIRST!!!
My husband and I were working in the backyard of a house that had mosquitoes everywhere! I had another brand of repellant with us the first day, but I read that Tough & Tender would fend off bugs. I wanted to experiment and took my spray bottle of diluted Tough & Tender along, and we lightly sprayed it on. Only place I missed was my face. Not one mosquito landed on us except for the ones flying at my face. I rubbed a little on and no more mosquitoes! Needless to say, the other brand went into the garbage. I'll use the safer (and cheaper!) Tough & Tender any day!
PS. It also works on those biting gnats that come out at night. I LOVE Melaleuca products and have found many solutions in your book! Thank you!
I love The Melaleuca Wellness Guide and all that it has in it! When our family went tent camping last weekend, I decided to try one of the insect repellents from the guide. Now to put it to the test, I put it on exposed areas. I have to say that after 2 days camping, I was the only one who did not have multiple mosquito bites. It was so easy to mix, and I ended up doubling the recipe. A little went a long way, and I could put it on my face and not worry about irritation from harsh chemicals. I used it probably 3 times throughout the day, or whenever I started feeling like I was starting to get attacked by mosquitoes. I even put some on our 3-year-old grandson! What a simple, effective, and safe way to fight off the insects. Since becoming a customer, I have had nothing but great results from all of the Melaleuca products I use. A customer for life!
I want to share how I began using Tough & Tender for bugs, and other secrets I found on my own. When my friend was visiting, and we were having lunch on the back deck, the flies began to hang around, and I was ready to pick up our food and move indoors because I find flies very annoying. My friend Karen suggested that I get the spray bottle of Tough & Tender to spray around the deck, and she did, and my concern was that it may get in our food. Then she had to remind me that there are no harmful chemicals in Melaleuca products. So after she sprayed under the picnic table, around the deck, and in the air, not one fly came back. I also had an experience when we were in the mountains at a cousin's cabin and the mosquitoes were in full force. I pulled out my Tough & Tender (I was prepared going to the mountains with a concern about evening mosquitoes) and sprayed around our area, and then sprayed my arms and around my clothes. I did not get bit at all. One more thing is that our area is infiltrated with "stink bugs." I spray the door sills and around the window sills once a week and it is rare for me to find a stink bug in my house. I love Tough & Tender.
We have many mosquitoes, black flies, sand flies, etc. where I live, and the summer can become pretty uncomfortable. I hate to use the many bug repellents that are on the market. I put dabs of Melaleuca Oil T36-C5 behind my ears, on my hairline, on my neck, and over the tops of my hands when I am working in the garden or cutting the lawn. The insects stay away from me! This is a natural insect repellent. Five years ago, we moved to South Florida, and after being spoiled with practically a pest-free environment in San Diego for almost 20 years, I had to find something to keep me from being eaten alive by insects. I'm one of those people who take 6 steps outside at dusk, and gets bitten more than once! I remembered that one of the informative RM Barry emails my sister had forwarded to me mentioned a natural insect repellent. I wiped down my exposed arms & legs and ventured outside to test it. I ended up working around the yard for almost an hour, at sunset, and didn't get bit once! I was amazed! And the best part...my skin didn't feel all sticky or tacky like it does from other commercial bug sprays. Now I can go back to working in the yard in mornings & evenings, and not in the heat of the day. Thank you Melaleuca!
In April, I came home to find what appeared to be an explosion of infant roaches crawling all over our West wall, outside the house. There were literally millions of the nasty things! I took a 16 oz bottle, and per directions on the Sol-U-Mel bottle, mixed in 2/3 cup, then sprayed the mess . . . Instantly the little buggers started dying!! Not only that, but the ones I hadn't hit, changed direction when they came near where I had sprayed. I find this to be much better than using a dangerous insecticide on our house, especially since the wall in question is the one that has a window into my 7 year old daughter's room.
I have been a Melaleuca Customer for 4 years. My family of 6 lives in a lovely maturely landscaped subdivision. Our backyard is surrounded by over 40 trees; most are different kinds of evergreens. We also have too many Hosta plants, which together make our yard a mosquito haven! In The Melaleuca Wellness Guide there are many versions of safe repellents, but because our need was so great to repel mosquitoes, I mixed up the 'Rain Forest Strength' repellent and have NOT used Cutter, Off, Deep Woods etc. in 3 years! I shared this recipe with others and truly realized the value, after one of my customers shared that it worked in Missouri, where her family has vacationed for over 20 years and had been unsuccessful in preventing 'chiggers' until using this! Amazing that she had tried EVERYTHING under the sun until Melaleuca! I am so grateful for the way a simple shopping decision can help others.
