Lice Prevention - Back to School Time

(Please read our disclaimer)

It is normal to feel distress at the thought of tiny blood sucking insects crawling though your child’s hair, but there is no need to feel ashamed, unclean, or embarrassed. Head lice are not particular about hygiene or lack of hygiene. They are opportunistic insects looking for a meal, and are most common among preschool and elementary school-age children and their families and caretakers. The Centers for Disease Control report that in the United States, an estimated 6 million to 12 million lice infestations occur each year among children 3 to 11 years of age.

It is a relief to know that lice cannot jump or fly. Instead they are picked up by close head to head contact. Even so, it is possible to catch lice by sharing hats, clothing, or combs and brushes. Symptoms of an infestation include intense itching, a "something is crawling in my head feeling." Some kids will scratch so much that they develop a bacterial infection.

There are safer alternatives to using a pesticide on your child’s head. Chemicals can be absorbed through the skin and inhaled by both the child and whoever is applying the chemicals. Using a pesticide to kill the lice can be more dangerous than the lice infestation and may not be effective at eliminating lice. For years The Melaleuca Wellness Guide has been warning us that lice are becoming resistant to the leading chemicals used to combat them.

Now a recent story featured in USA Today reports that "super lice" have developed genetic mutations that make them resistant to many of the chemicals that used to kill lice.

TREATMENT

If you think your child has lice, do not panic. There are 3 basic things you will need to do: 1) Kill the living lice. 2) Remove the attached eggs, also known as nits and 3) Avoid re-infestation.

An Australian study compared the efficacy and safety of three lice treatments: A formula with tea tree oil and lavender oil, a lice "suffocation" product, and a product containing pyrethrins and piperonyl butoxide (pesticide). The results demonstrated that the tea tree-lavender product and the lice "suffocation" product did a better job eliminating lice than the pesticide product.

The Melaleuca Wellness Guide recommends that immediately upon suspecting or seeing evidence of lice, shampoo with Melaleuca Original Shampoo and bathe with 1 oz Sol-U-Mel and 1 oz Renew Bath Oil added to the bath water. Afterwards, massage T36-C5 into the scalp and hair to soften and dislodge the nits. Comb the oil through the hair. To fumigate the live insects, wrap hair in a hot moist towel for 10 minutes. Repeat every other day for at least 5 treatments (10 days). Generously applying Sei Bella Leave-in Detangling & Smoothing Spray or one of the Affinia Moisturizing Conditioners will make it easier to run a fine tooth comb or nit comb from the scalp to the hair ends. The nits should comb off easily.

PREVENTION

In a 4 oz spray bottle of water add 3 drops of T36-C5 and 3 drops of lavender oil. In the morning, lightly spray your child's hair. The scent will be pleasant to you and your child, and unattractive to lice. Melaleuca oil and lavender oil are natural insect repellents and, as we learned from the above cited Australian study, this combination also kills lice.

Another simple preventative measure is washing hair regularly with Melaleuca Original Shampoo which is rich in pure T36-C5 Melaleuca Oil and natural conditions like sunflower and silk amino acids.

The start of a new school year is an exciting time. Along with shopping for all those needed back-to-school supplies, make sure to have a supply of natural lice killing and prevention products.

My granddaughter attended a sleep over about a month ago. The next day when she got home the mom of the girl who she stayed with called and said one of the girls had lice. We checked my granddaughter's hair and found nothing. Then another call and another. After checking and rechecking over the next day still, no lice! Come to find out lice do not like Melaleuca oil which is in all the products she uses. From her shampoo, Affinia, of course, Renew Body Wash and lotions! Thanks again Melaleuca! She was the only one with no lice!

We have the very best lice prevention in using our Original Melaleuca Shampoo with Melaleuca Oil on a regular basis.... Add a few drops of Melaleuca Oil with the shampoo and this is a great preventative and will help get rid of lice once it's already a problem.

I am a nurse, so I often get calls from my friends when family members are sick or they need some advice. I have had several calls about lice when school was letting out this year. I had to explain that the over the counter products are just so harmful to their kids! Most people don't know what is in these products. When you look on the CDC site for information you will find that the Nix lice treatment, for example, has turpentine from resin of balsam fir tree, Polyoxyethylene 10 cetyl ether, isopropyl alcohol which is a colorless flammable chemical compound with strong odor, and many more listed. When you look at what is REALLY inside, would you want to put that on your child’s head? Look in The Melaleuca Wellness Guide at page 175. Here is a better alternative. I gave these items to two different families - the shampoo, Sol-U-Mel, and Melaleuca oil with a copy of the page to guide them. I got calls back from both stating the lice are gone completely and they are much happier with the results!!! And I got new customers!! Education is the key.

Lice prevention was one of the original selling points for me to start using Melaleuca products. I have 3 young children and I know how fast those little critters pass through schools. I am happy to say that by adding a couple of drops of Melaleuca oil to each load of laundry and using the Melaleuca Original Shampoo, none of my 3 kids have ever experienced lice, despite many outbreaks at their schools and recreation activities. There have been a few times when they were the only children not affected!

Lice prevention: I spray Sol-U-Mel on our clothes. I use the laundry line MelaPower, MelaSoft, and MelaBrite. Plus I use Melaleuca oil. Our school seems to be prone to having lice. By using these products I have been able to ward off lice and have never gotten it. Thank you for the great products brought by Melaleuca.
