Our vision is precious. Unfortunately, changes can be so subtle that symptoms go unnoticed, or changes are blamed on just "getting-older." The National Eye Institute gives us an example of how a person "sees" who has age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, diabetic eye disease, glaucoma, dry eyes, or low vision. As we age it is common for us to reach a point where we need reading glasses, but severe vision loss is not part of normal aging.
The University of Maryland notes that cataract-prevention research has focused on antioxidants and carotenoids, specifically lutein and zeaxanthin, which are naturally found in the lenses of the eyes. And while researchers haven't been able to show that these nutrients prevent cataracts, it is known that colorful fruits and vegetables provide healthy antioxidants that are important for head to toe health. It is believed that important plant chemicals and nutrients may be associated with a lower risk for cataracts.
Dry eyes can cause many symptoms such as pain, irritation, and blurred vision. Without sufficient tears to bathe the eye, inflections are possible. Omega-3 fatty acids may help reduce inflammation that contributes to dry-eye syndrome.
Age Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD or AMD) is the deterioration of the central focus region of the back of the eye, called the macula. It is called "age related" because generally it occurs in both men and women over the age of 50. AMD causes a loss of vision in the center of the visual field. Imagine a penny taped to the center of your glasses, poor central vision but better peripheral vision. The disease can advance to legal blindness, making it hard to recognize faces and colors, and causing difficulty when driving and reading.
The macula, also called the "yellow spot," contains high levels of the pigments lutein and zeaxanthin. High levels of lutein in the macula can absorb blue light which is believed to be the most damaging of lights. Unfortunately our bodies do not make lutein, and most people do not eat enough daily servings of deep green vegetables needed to get enough lutein. NutraView contains the research-recommended 10mg of lutein, and 2mg zeaxanthin, plus a powerful antioxidant combination of blueberry and bilberry extract that is believed to improve night vision.
Risk factors associated with AMD include smoking, exposure to second hand smoke, obesity, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, and low antioxidant intake combined with a lifetime of excessive sun exposure. Consuming DHA and EPA Omega-3 fatty acids and fish was associated with a reduction in risk.
Coldwater Omega-3 with 660mg DHA and 270mg EPA contain the ideal balance of DHA and EPA (2:1).
The Melaleuca Wellness Guide tells us that a major contributor to eye challenges is the typical high-fat, high-sugar, preservative-laden American diet. Eating high glycemic foods like cakes, cookies, white bread, and sugar-sweetened foods quickly raise blood sugar. The New York Times reports on a study that found that those who ate the most high-glycemic foods had more than a 40 percent increased risk of developing macular degeneration compared to those who ate a healthier diet.
Since the deficiency of just one vitamin or mineral can lead to a variety of eye challenges, the Vitality Pack with Oligo and ProVex-Plus, along with NutraView, are necessary. These help to protect eyes not only from macular degeneration, but can often help with blurred vision, cataracts, eyestrain, floaters, itchy or tired eyes, thinning eyelashes, or vascular retinopathy. In addition, the glucosamine found in Replenex has been shown to prevent some diseases of the eye. People who are near-sighted usually have much less glucosamine than people with normal vision.
New research has associated the regular use of aspirin with an increased risk of age-related macular degeneration. ProvexCV is a recommended alternative for cardiovascular health and it comes with the additional benefits of grape seed extract.
Good nutrition and needed supplements not only help protect our eye health, but also our total body health.

In 2010, I started having severe light sensitivity and my eyes ached and hurt all the time. I could not stop rubbing them. Rubbing them so hard I was actually rubbing off protective coverings we have on our eyes, giving myself double vision and all sorts of problems. I learned that most of my problem was from dry eye. The other problem is the sensitivity to new lighting requirements by the US government.
I started taking NutraView in the fall of 2011. I am so glad I did. I have received relief from dry eye, and the pain and soreness that comes from that. And I am not constantly rubbing my eyes and causing even more problems! The light sensitivity is less, and all and all, I have much healthier eyes. I am so happy to have the relief and to have NutraView. I would NOT ever want to be without it!! I think it has even improved my eye sight!
Thank you so much for you newsletter! My name is Fran, I am 44 years old and I have been a Melaleuca customer for two years. I can honestly say that becoming a member has changed my life. Shortly after joining, I was diagnosed with Grave's disease. The Grave's disease caused me to have double vision which really got in the way of my daily life. At the time I was already taking Vitality 6 and loving it, so I decided to add NutraView. I figured it can't hurt, only help. And help it did!!! Within six weeks I noticed the double vision wasn't getting in the way anymore. It was gone! I no longer suffer from double vision, and thanks to Melaleuca I see clearly again.
I am 79 years old and happy to say that I have been taking NutraView ever since it came out. I have my eyes checked every year, and most of the time I do not need a new prescription. My dad had glaucoma so my optometrist also checks me for that every year. But so far all is well. I am so happy that my eyes are healthy. My dad went blind in his later years because of glaucoma and cataracts. I am happy that this will not be my fate as well. And my optometrist is one of my Melaleuca customers.... and he also uses NutraView.
My Happy Eyes Story: Back many years ago when Melaleuca first came out with NutraView I immediately decided I was going to try it! Just the month before I had my glasses changed and the optometrist told me to have my eyes checked every year. He specifically stated, "Don't let it go more than a year," because there are slight symptoms of macular degeneration and your eyes, at your age (73), could change a lot in a short period of time. So I began using the NutraView and didn't have any eye problems.
Well, a year went by all too fast and I didn't get my eyes checked. At 18 months I decided I just had to get myself in there and have my eyes checked again. He checked my eyes and told me I don't need to replace my glasses. He said there was only "one click" difference from my last exam, a year and a half before. I was so happy!!! I have had my eyes checked several times and have only changed glasses one time. I still see well enough to thread my own needles, so I think I am doing excellent! Thank you Melaleuca for so many wonderful products.
And thank you RM Barry Publications for the wonderful book The Melaleuca Wellness Guide! I use it many times for myself or when others have a problem that I haven't ever experienced and help them out. It is a very valuable book that is always kept in a handy place ready for use at a moment's notice.
I have been a customer with Melaleuca for over 22 years. When I was 40 I could not read a menu, no matter how hungry I was. I have worn contacts or glasses since I was nine years old. The eye doctor said I was legally blind.
When Melaleuca came out with NutraView, I was their loyal customer from day one. In a few months my eyes started to improve. My optometrist couldn't believe that my eyes kept getting better. I have decreased my prescription from 6.75 diopters to under 2.0. I can read the fine print on labels with no corrective lenses. I can even see the car license plate in front of me. I used to have trouble seeing the car if my contact went out of place. My first driver's license was given to me by a kind lady even though I didn't quite pass the vision requirement with my new glasses. Now I can read signs and I could safely navigate to the next exit if I lost my contacts or glasses. It has been wonderful.
I just went to the eye doctor last week and he said my eyes were very healthy. No problem with the optic nerve, the retina, the macula: All healthy. I still wear corrective lenses, but they are no long "coke" bottles and I can read without them. Thanks to Melaleuca's wonderful products. I do take the Vitality Coldwater Omega-3 in our Total Vitality Pack as well.
I decided that with my aging eyes I would give NutraView a try. After only a few months, I was driving one night on a two-lane road and noticed that the car in front of me was breaking and pulling to the right every time we met an oncoming car. I pointed it out to my husband and he asked me why they were doing that. I told him I USED to do the same. It is called night blindness. Thanks to Melaleuca and NutraView, I don't suffer from night blindness any more. I continue to take NutraView to continue with my eye health.
