Earaches and Ear Infections

(Please read our disclaimer)

National Public Radio tells us that every year millions of parents take their children to the doctor for ear infections, and most of the children receive antibiotics. Yet the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a wait-and-see approach because 70 percent of children get better on their own within two or three days, and most are better within a week to 10 days. Taking antibiotics is not without risks. They may cause side effects and allow the development of antibiotic-resistant superbugs which are harder to treat.

Remedies

Tea tree oil has long been used as a treatment for ear infections. The Melaleuca Wellness Guide suggests using a drop of T36-C5 or T40-C3 mixed with 15 to 20 drops of warm olive oil. Insert the oil mixture directly into the outside ear canal with a dropper 3 to 4 times daily. Avoid using full-strength T36-C5 in ears as local irritation can result. A wet warm compress to hold against the outer ear can be made by dropping a few drops of tea tree oil on a wet wash cloth and warming it up in the microwave. Congestion can be relieved by inhaling the steam from the tea tree oil treated wash cloth. Antihistamines or decongestants are sometimes recommended to help reduce excess trapped fluid.

Children who chew gum that contains xylitol have fewer ear infections. Research demonstrates that xylitol can reduce the risk of the adherence of certain bacteria that cause tooth decay and ear infections. Exceed Sugarless Gum contains xylitol. You can also help prevent and fight infections by promoting a healthy immune system by consistently taking the Vitality Pack with Oligo or Koala Pals for children.

For Severe or Prolonged Ear Infections

While most ear infections will clear up without treatment with antibiotics, they may be needed for a child or adult with a severe infection. A severe untreated ear infection can lead to meningitis or brain lesions.

WebMD lists symptoms that may require a visit to the doctor.

At the first sign of discomfort, chew Exceed Sugarless Gum. Moisten a clean cotton ball with olive oil; drop about 3 drops of Melaleuca oil on it also. Gently place on outside of ear canal (nothing pushed inside). Tape to ear (paper tape is painless), and leave it on for several hours. Change and renew this treatment throughout the day. It's worked for us many times! Melaleuca always comes to the rescue!

When our daughter was in grade 3, she woke one morning complaining of an earache…so I quickly checked The Melaleuca Wellness Guide which suggested only one drop of Melaleuca Oil and 15-20 drops of virgin olive oil. I was amazed that she was still able to go to school that morning, saying the pain in her ear was gone. So thankful I didn't need to take her to the doctor which may have possibly resulted in antibiotics!! Thank you Melaleuca!

My daughter Chiara was about 1 year old when I noticed she was pulling on her ear a lot. She was in obvious discomfort; she wouldn't play or eat and would fall asleep for a few seconds only to wake up whimpering again. I immediately suspected an ear infection. I took our bottle of Melaleuca oil, mixed it with olive oil, put a few drops in her ears, and literally within minutes she was back to herself again. I couldn't believe it! Thank you Melaleuca for yet another saved trip to the clinic!

I have used Melaleuca oil to relieve earaches in my four year old twice now. I mixed warm olive oil with a few drops of Melaleuca oil, soaked a small piece of cotton wool, and placed it in his ear at night. He would not keep it in during the day! Both times it cured the earache. I have found it best to keep using it for a couple of nights after they stop complaining of pain just to stop it from coming back. I have memories of my older children crying and crying at night with earaches and wish I knew about Melaleuca years ago -- so much better than sleepless nights and antibiotics!

My ear infection story begins with my dog. One day I noticed he was rubbing his head along the couch and the floor. It was obvious that something was bothering him. I immediately searched, thinking he had a tick as it was that time of year. I couldn't see anything. There was nothing to indicate a problem either, no redness, nothing. He didn't appear to be miserable but he did continue rubbing his head. It was late on a Saturday and I knew the vet wouldn't be in. I called anyway and left a message with the answering service. He returned my call and said it sounded like a possible ear infection. Having read in your book about using olive oil mixed with Melaleuca oil, I asked the vet if I might try that on my dog. He said he could call in some drops but I could try that in the meantime. I decided to give your recommended solution a try before I ran to the store. By the next morning, he had stopped rubbing his head against the furniture and he appeared to be back to normal. I thought I would have him checked on Monday but I continued a few drops of the mixture throughout the day and he was perfectly fine. I did this for 3 days and then continued to rub it on the inside surface of his ear for a few more days. The vet’s assistant called me on Monday morning to see how he was doing and schedule an appointment. This wasn't necessary anymore. My dog’s ear problem was healed and my pocketbook was still full because I didn't have to pay for a visit. Lonnie my dog was happy and so was I!!!!! This is the second time I've used Melaleuca oil for an issue with my dog. I personally use it all the time for different issues but I'm so happy to find how useful it's been on one of my favorite family members!!!! Lonnie has sadly passed on at the ripe old age of 15+, may he RIP. I would recommend this to anyone with a dog and I do.
