It seems like a contradiction that a machine used to clean dishes can harbor disease-causing fungi. And yet in one study 62% of tested dishwashers contained disease-causing fungi on the rubber seal inside the door. And 56% of the fungi were black yeast known to cause hard-to-cure lung infections. The hot, moist environment in the dishwasher appears to be ideal for the multiplication of fungi.
As for the dishwasher detergent, the Environmental Protection Agency warns that automatic dishwashing detergents are poisonous if swallowed. Hand dishwashing detergents are not as harsh as automatic dishwashing detergents, but if swallowed can still irritate your mouth and throat and cause nausea. The EPA recommends that both kinds of detergents be kept away from small children.
PubMed presented a case-study of a man who developed respiratory problems after exposure to a cloud of dishwasher detergent powder. The report concludes with the caution that even routinely handling dishwasher detergent is not entirely risk free.
Patented Diamond Brite contains no harsh caustic chemicals, and does not require child-resistant caps. It contains a variety of naturally derived enzymes that leave dishes clean and bright without depending on environmentally damaging phosphates and toxic chemicals. It also contains an anti-filming agent that repels water stains. The ingredients in Diamond Brite are 100% nontoxic, and include fungus-killing T36-C5 Melaleuca Oil.
The Melaleuca Wellness Guide, in the Technical Information section, points out that the pure oil of Melaleuca alternifolia is known to contain at least 100 compounds. The Journal of Applied Microbiology reports that all the components of Melaleuca alternifolia oil, except for one, have anti-fungal activity.
Cleaning Your Dishwasher
The Melaleuca Wellness Guide gives us the following tip when using Diamond Brite: When you first start using Diamond Brite in your dishwasher, run at least one empty cycle with 1 oz of MelaMagic and the regular amount of Diamond Brite. This will clean out any buildup from the commercial soaps previously used. Then use Diamond Brite as directed. If you have soft water or a high efficiency dishwasher, you may need to use less.
A Safer Solution
When hand washing dishes or using a dishwasher, use only nontoxic detergents that clean the dishes and the dishwasher. Although we may or may not immediately feel the effects, chemicals can enter our body by mouth, skin, or inhalation. It makes sense to choose safer products whenever possible.

Diamond Brite was a life saver for my old dishwasher. I had been after my husband about needing a new dishwasher. Ours is probably close to 20 years old. I had tried every other dishwasher detergent on the market and everything left this awful white film on everything. So when I signed up with Melaleuca I decided to try it immediately. Oh my goodness!!! I love this stuff!! My plastic containers did not have a film on them any more and everything was so sparkly!!!! Love me some Diamond Brite!!! Still have not gotten a new dishwasher.
This is more my daughter's testimonial than mine. When she bought her first condo, the dishwasher had a brown stain in the bottom that she could not get out, even scrubbing it with scouring powder. That was when she became a Melaleuca customer and started using Diamond Brite in her dishwasher. After a couple of weeks she was very surprised to note that the brown stain was completely gone.
I bought Diamond Brite gel, but only used the dishwasher a couple times a month when we had company. Then the packets came out. The packets worked great! Clean dishes, no spot glasses, everything! I run the dishwasher every 2 to 3 days. Sometimes the remaining stuff on the dishes can be pretty dried on in that time. But the dishes still come out sparkling clean! I have added a little Sol-U-Mel to help sanitize. Thank you Melaleuca for such great products, and thank you RM Barry for publishing your book with great ways to use the products!
Before the month of March, 2012 I was suffering from eczema on my hands. I developed it from supermarket brand soaps and dish washing liquids. Nothing helped get rid of my eczema and my skin continued to get irritated. I consulted my doctor, but the only solution was to use a cortisone cream, but that washed off when I would cleanse my hands. Even with that, the problem wouldn't go away. When I discovered this wonderful company, Melaleuca and enrolled, my enroller suggested that I try the Lemon Brite to hand wash my dishes. I joined with an order and that was one of the products. When my order arrived by UPS I was so excited to take the Lemon Brite out of the box. I opened it and placed some warm water in the sink with a few drops of it into the water. Right away my hands felt soothed. Within, a month's time my skin started to improve. I could see the dry skin and itching leaving. My skin is completely better; I no longer have eczema on my hands. Thank you Melaleuca, I am so grateful, you saved my skin.
Diamond Brite and Lemon Brite are both great products to have in your kitchen. Before we became Melaleuca customers, I periodically would walk into my kitchen and smell a bad smell. I would look all over for something that might be causing the smell. Many times it was traced to my dishwasher that was currently running. I concluded that it was the chemicals in the dishwashing liquid reacting with bits of food left on my dishes. I just figured it was something I had to deal with. One day shortly after I started using Diamond Brite I noticed a smell and wondered where that fresh clean scent was coming from. I again traced it to my dishwasher. What a change from the popular brand I had used previously! I no longer have those awful mystery smells coming from my dishwasher and I end up with wonderfully clean dishes every time -- and I don't pre-rinse or wash them before putting them in the dishwasher. Since I began using Lemon Brite hand dishwashing liquid I have noticed that my dishcloths never get that sour smelly odor. Even after using the same cloth for several days it never smells bad for me. I now throw it in the laundry due to it being dirty rather than because it is a smelly mess. Thank you Melaleuca for giving us such great products to make some of those mundane chores more enjoyable!
I love our Lemon Brite and Diamond Brite, for so many reasons. First of all the Lemon Brite is the only dishwashing liquid that I can put my hands in without them burning and getting all red and dried out. I used to dread doing the dishes as I could not stand the smell of the dish soap as it wafted up in the steam from the hot water, the scent of the Lemon Brite does not bother me at all, and I love the smell of the Green Apple. The scent does not remain on the dishes afterwards, something that always bothers me with the other dish soaps. When I lend out a pot or dish to someone, it always comes back smelling of their dish soap so I rewash it in the Lemon Brite before using it. I use the Lemon Brite in my garden as well in dilution to treat my plants for pests, along with the Tough & Tender and Sol-U-Mel, something I learned in The Melaleuca Wellness Guide. It gives me peace of mind to know that I am able to use something safe. The same goes for the Diamond Brite. I always had a hard time with the smell of the other automatic dishwasher detergents. If ever I had to open the dishwasher during a cycle to put in a forgotten dish the chemical smell from the steam would make me feel ill. However, when I do this with the Diamond Brite the steam just smells like lemons and I do not feel any ill effects. It also works fantastic and I have to use so little. If I have a cup with extra tea stains on it, I just spray it with a little PreSpot before putting it in the dishwasher. I am so grateful for our safe and effective products, and for the solutions in the Wellness Guide. I love reading the information and stories in the Newsletter too. This is such a great resource for us, thank you so much for continuing to do this.
Oh my goodness these products have been the topic of conversation many times in my life. Everyone was complaining about the white sediment their dishwashers were leaving on their dishes. It was so bad one friend had a repairman out. His comment was it was the dishwashing soap she was using. Diamond Brite to the rescue. Now Lemon Brite is another great product that I use all the time to wash my fruits to prevent fruit flies. Also my veggies are cleaned with it. It is great to get the chemicals and dirt off them. Thanks for all your hints. One of my customers was looking through The Melaleuca Wellness Guide today for remedies for her and her house, and putting in her order for things she needed...from warts to helping her puppy with dry skin. It is an amazing book about amazing products.
I live out in the country we have well water. Diamond Brite has made my life so much easier! It is the first dishwasher detergent that I have tried that actually not only gets my dishes clean, my dishes come out without any hard water build up or residue! Absolutely love Diamond Brite and the fact that I can finally use my dishwasher! Thank you Melaleuca!
