Cold Sores

(Please read our disclaimer)

Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus. After the initial infection, the cold sore virus becomes inactive or dormant waiting to reappear during times of prolonged stress, or when the immune system weakens. Most people have been exposed to cold sores but their immune system suppresses reoccurrences. Touching a cold sore can spread the infection to other sites or persons. Washing hands is of utmost importance and it is recommended to use gloves when applying ointment to a child's cold sore.

Arginine and Lysine

The Melaleuca Wellness Guide tells us that the herpes simplex virus feeds on an excessive intake of the amino acid arginine. During times of stress or illness, it may be helpful to avoid eating high arginine foods such as citrus fruits and nuts. The amino acid, lysine, has a dampening effect on arginine, so taking a lysine supplement is often recommended. Yogurt and cheeses have a desirable high lysine to arginine ratio and may speed up healing.

Melaleuca Oil (Tea Tree Oil)

Clinical studies verify that Melaleuca oil has antiviral effects on the herpes simplex virus. The Melaleuca Wellness Guide recommends application of T36-C5 at the first hint of a possible cold sore infection. Repeat every hour until the lesion either disappears or comes to a head. If it comes to a head continue to apply T36-C5 once every 2 hours, followed by MelaGel or Renew Lotion.

Sun Protection

Research confirms that spending time in the sun can trigger cold sores. Before going out in the sun, or better yet as a daily habit, apply Sun Shades Mineral Plus Sunscreen SPF 30+. It feels like a moisturizer, and features a unique form of zinc oxide dispersion that dries clear and provides protection against UVA and UVB rays.

Regularly protecting our lips from sun exposure also protects against skin cancer. This article tells us that lips contain almost no sun-protecting melanin. It notes that any lipstick containing an SPF of 15 or higher is protective. Matte or opaque lipsticks also offer some protection, but the article points out that shimmery and shiny lipsticks and glosses do not offer sun protection, and may instead attract UV rays. Sun Shades Lip Balm SPF 15 offers UVA/UVB protection and keeps lips protected.

One Last Note

There appears to be a connection between viral infections, such as the viruses that cause cold sores, and autoimmune diseases. This abstract notes a connection between the first appearances of cold sores in patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis (hypothyroid) and months later developing hashitoxicosis, a temporary hyperthyroidism caused by inflammation sometimes requiring hospitalization.

We have used the Lip Balm at the first indication of a cold sore coming on. It stops most full-blown cold sores. All others are treated with a drop of the Melaleuca tea tree oil on a Q-tip applied directly to the emerging cold sore. Thanks to the antiseptic and penetrating properties of the Melaleuca oil, they go away quite rapidly. Thanks, Melaleuca!

I used to have terrible cold sores until I found Melaleuca. Internally I am taking the Melaleuca vitamins. I also added oxygen rich water to my diet and topically I use the Melaleuca oil at the first tingling followed up with the MelaGel. My cold sores have been less and less frequent. Thank you, Melaleuca for such a high quality product.

I am so happy to say that cold sores seem to be a thing of the past for me and my husband now. Every time we used to get overtired or overstressed, we would end up with a cold sore. It seems that after starting to take the Melaleuca supplements, we got cold sores less and less ... and now we haven't had one for a few years, not because we haven't been overtired or overstressed, but thanks to Melaleuca.

I suffered from cold sores and mouth ulcers for years. No prescription medications or over-the-counter medicines ever worked. When I was introduced to Melaleuca I started with a Value Pack. In that pack was a bottle of Melaleuca T36-C5. I had heard it worked really well for many ailments so I applied the oil to my cold sores-fever blisters and the pain went away immediately and dried up within a few days. I haven't had another cold sore or fever blister and I truly believe it's because of the Vitality Pack powered by Oligo. I am so thankful to have found Melaleuca 15 years ago. Wish I had found them sooner.

My husband was always getting cold sores either from being sick or having too much stress. We noticed after he began using Melaleuca's Vitality 6 vitamins, there was a great reduction in frequency and duration of colds and cold sores! Today IF he feels a cold sore in its first stages he will apply the T36-C5 Oil to minimize the outbreak and ease the pain. Thank you Melaleuca!

I just had a cold sore that was more like impetigo. It was located between my nose and upper lip. I put T40-C3 Melaleuca oil on it followed with MelaGel. The internet said if it was impetigo, that it would take 3 weeks to heal. It has been only a week and a half and it is barely noticeable. I credit the power of the T40-C3 Melaleuca oil to heal this completely and without a scar. I applied it 3 to 4 times a day. Thank you Melaleuca for such great healing products!

My husband gets cold sores. Although not very often, when he does get them, they tend to get really nasty and in the past have been hard to get rid of. He has used over the counter products and prescriptions for years. About 6 months ago he got a really bad one and because I love and use essential oils for many things, I started researching what he might try. First of all I had him take Activate Immune Complex to help boost his immune system and because it has zinc in it which is also said to be helpful. He already takes Peak Performance Packs. I made a blend of about 2 oz's of aloe vera gel that I had along with about 8 drops of Melaleuca Oil and then I used 2 drops each of Myrrh (it's cleansing and helps skin irritation), 2 drops of Peppermint (it's antiviral), 1 drop of Lemon and 1 drop of Ylang Ylang. I had him start applying it right away with a clean q-tip about every 3 to 4 hours. He did say that it burned a little on one of the days so I had him stop using it that day and use a little Triple Antibiotic Ointment. It worked....he said it cleared it up faster than anything he's done before and it hasn't come back.

I will get a cold sore if I get really stressed. I have always taken an over-the-counter probiotic. But the last time I did that I ended up in the ER with an allergic reaction. So when I felt one coming up, I grabbed my Melaleuca Wellness Guide this time. So anytime I thought about it I would put some of theT36-C5 on it and I upped my Florify to two a day. It is amazing how quickly it was gone!! Melaleuca Rocks!!!
