Celiac Disease

Celiac disease is a serious autoimmune disease that is difficult to diagnose. When a person with celiac disease eats gluten, which is naturally found in wheat, rye, or barley, their immune system responds by attacking the small intestine, the site where most nutrient absorption takes place. Without proper absorption of nutrients the disease can cause digestive tract symptoms or symptoms in other parts of the body. We learn from the Celiac Disease Foundation that celiac disease can cause some 300 symptoms. Or it can present itself without any symptoms.

Delaying diagnosis or consuming gluten products increases damaging inflammation and can trigger a variety of diseases. Persons with celiac disease may develop other autoimmune diseases such as autoimmune thyroid disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and type1 diabetes.

Genetics

Almost everyone who develops celiac disease carries specific HLA genes, but more than genetics is involved. According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine genetic variants that seem to increase the risk of celiac are found in 30 percent of the general population, but only 3 percent of persons who carry the gene variants develop celiac disease. Scientists believe exposure to something in the environment, and changes in other genes, may trigger the development of celiac disease.

Possible Causes

Some persons believe that celiac disease is increasing because the wheat we are eating contains higher levels of gluten. Science Daily explains that gluten levels in various varieties of wheat have changed little on average since the 1920s, and yet we are eating more gluten because we are eating more wheat flour and eating more food products made with the additive "vital gluten."

Another possible cause, according to research published in the Interdisciplinary Toxicology Journal is that glyphosate, the active ingredient in the herbicide Roundup, is causing changes that lead to celiac disease. They report that glyphosate has been shown to deplete needed amino acids and disrupt probiotics needed for proper digestion. Interestingly, they report that Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli, two ingredients in Melaleuca's Florify, help heal the gut and may make gluten less allergenic.

The New York Times also tells us that Bifidobacteria were depleted in the digestive tract of children with celiac disease compared with children without celiac disease. This article draws attention to the fact that celiac disease involves more than genetics and gluten exposure, and that gut bacteria may play an important part in prevention of celiac disease and other autoimmune diseases.

Probiotics enhance and protect our immune system. A Note About Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity

Eating wheat or gluten can cause problems to some persons who do not have autoimmune celiac disease. They may have gluten intolerance or a problem digesting wheat. Others may experience a delayed food sensitivity reaction after eating wheat.

An estimated six percent of the U.S. population may be affected by gluten sensitivity. Again, gluten sensitivity is not celiac disease, and for some persons reactions are related to how often and how much gluten containing foods they eat.

I don't have Celiac Disease, but I do appreciate that all of Melaleuca's supplements do not contain gluten, and that Melaleuca carries products that can be safely used by customers who cannot eat gluten or are avoiding gluten because they have other autoimmune diseases. I do have Hashimoto's which is an autoimmune thyroid disease and yet my thyroid is normal and has been staying normal for years. I am very careful with what kinds of supplements and foods I eat. A gluten-free diet is often suggested for persons who have autoimmune thyroid disease.
